Bering Ecosystem Study (BEST) Talks &
Posters
Since the start
of our activities (April 2005), the BEST Project Office (PO) has given
ten oral and two poster presentations on the BEST program and changing
marine ecosystems of the Bering Sea.
Bering Ecosystem Study
(BEST) Research and Funding Plans Town-Hall Meeting
February 7, 2007; American
Society of Limnology and Oceanography Annual Meeting, Santa
Fe, NM
This Town-Hall meeting showcased the Bering Ecosystem Study (BEST),
a new research program sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
Five proposals were funded during the first BEST funding competition
in 2006. A second BEST AO has been published with a closing date of
March 15, 2007 (www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf07533).
The Town-Hall meeting provided those interested in this program a chance
to learn about what projects were been funded during the first competition
and about additional funding opportunities through the second AO. Two
brief introductory presentations on recent changes in the Bering Sea
and on the scope of the funded proposals, were followed by an open question
/ answer session. A lively question and answer period followed the opening
presentations. Approximately 23 people attended the town-hall meeting,
with 17 participants signing in.
Marie Bundy (of the NSF OPP) provided
brief comments on the expectations of NSF concerning the aspects that
needed to be addressed in the proposals.
George Hunt (of the
BEST PO) gave a short presentation on recent changes in the Bering Sea,
the research projects currently funded during the first BEST competition,
and the first BEST cruise plan scheduled for April - May 2007.
