Bering Ecosystem Study (BEST) Science Plan
Natural Sciences
The Bering Ecosystem Study (BEST) Science Plan
was developed during community workshops
in 2002 and 2003, with the support of the National Science Foundation.
The BEST science plan outlines an inter-disciplinary research initiative
to improve the understanding of the effects of climate variability,
at multiple temporal and spatial scales, on the marine ecosystems of
the eastern Bering Sea.

Social Sciences
To complement the BEST natural
science plan and to capitalize on interest in collaborations among resident
communities, natural and social scientists, a committee was organized
to formulate a social science plan for the Bering Sea in early winter
2004, with support from the NSF Arctic Social Sciences Program. An outline
of a social science, including the concerns and research interests of
Bering Sea community liaisonswas drafted in the fall 2004, and subsequently
developed into a draft science plan entitled Sustaining the Bering
Ecosystem.
