CURRICULUM VITAE
LOWRY, Nicholas.
Born: 14th March 1969, Birmingham, U.K.
Nationality: British.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
University Of Edinburgh, 1987-1991.
Bachelor of Science. Biological Sciences (Zoology). July 1991.
University of Aberdeen 1992-1993.
MSc. in Marine and Fisheries Science, September 1993.
MSc. RESEARCH PROJECT
I completed a thesis on the effect of an increase in netting twine thickness
on the cod-end selectivity of trawls for haddock in the North Sea, in association
with the SOAFD Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen. The project involved carrying out
experiments on board a commercial trawler in the North Sea, analysing the data
obtained and relating this to the fishing industry and to mathematical models of
selectivity. (1,10)
University of Washington, School of Fisheries 1997 -
Graduate study for degree of Ph.D. Started September 1997.

Aquaculture (DIFTA), Hirtshals, Denmark. Fishing gear division.

with changes in mesh size in different areas with different vessel sizes and
gear type. (Danish ministry for fisheries) (2,3)

review of populations and their interrelations with fisheries. (Project leader)
(Danish ministry for fisheries) (4,5,12)

(Project co-ordinator) (EC FAIR project) (14,15)
October 1996, National Agricultural Research Foundation, Fisheries
Research Institute, Kavala, Greece. Summer School 1996: Fisheries and
environmental degradation of the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Invited lecturer
(Selective fishing gear).
June 1994- July 1994, Scotnet, Fraserburgh, Scotland. Project in
collaboration with INIDEP, Argentina, on the effect of trawl designs and square
mesh windows on catch of undersized hake. Sea trial participation in Argentinian hake fishery.
September 1993- October 1993, Tweed Foundation, Melrose, Scottish Borders.
Assistant Biologist. Main responsibilities; Scale reading to determine age composition
of salmonid populations, electric fishing for estimation of juvenile fish abundance, and
analysis of historical catch records. I was also involved in training new employees in
how to carry out habitat surveys of river corridors during summer 1993 (see
below).
June 1992- September 1992, Tweed Foundation, Melrose, Scottish Borders. Setting up and
carrying out a survey of the river Ettrick in terms of its suitability and potential as
a habitat for salmonids, developing solutions to improve habitat and access for spawning fish.
