Applying for Teaching Assistantships in Aquatic and Fishery Sciences
Open positions will be advertised through graduate student lists in related departments (Oceanography, School of Marine Affairs, Biology, Forestry, QERM, and occasionally other environmentally-related departments depending upon course content.) Students from other departments may email linm@uw.edu to see if there are any current openings, but most positions except for the 100 and 200 level classes are filled by SAFS graduate students.
Finding Teaching Assistantships in Other Departments
The most direct way to search for any employment opportunities at the UW is through UWHires at:
Once on that site, graduate students can search for “Academic Student Employees” to find graduate student opportunities.
Grants and Funding Information Service Blog
The GFIS blog will collect post information about open assistantships, upcoming fellowship opportunities, information sessions for specific fellowships across campus and other important information for students looking for opportunities to fund their graduate career at the University of Washington. All teaching assistantships posted through UWHires should be posted to this blog.
Students, faculty and staff can subscribe to the blog to find out when new items are posted!
View the new blog at: http://uwgfis.blogspot.com/
In addition to using the blog above, below you may learn how each department would like to be contacted about potential TA’ships:
Program on the Environment
Will post all openings on the UWHires site(make link) and will go out over the GFIS blog (make link).
Biology
Biology does post an advertisement on UWHires any quarter for which they are anticipating a need. They ask that graduate students interested in TA’ships fill out a TA application from the following website and submit with CV and transcripts to Eileen O’Connor (eoc@uw.edu):
Prospective TA’s may contact Eileen directly at the email address above. Application materials are help for one year, so students don’t need to resubmit each quarter.
School of Forest Resources
Positions will be advertised internally to SFR students first. If a position is not filled with an SFR candidate, the position will be listed with UWHires.
School of Oceanography
Openings are advertised to Oceanography graduate students (and almost all positions are filled by Ocean students, but other interested students may send resumes to Michelle Townsend (mtown@uw.edu).
Center for Quantitative Science (Q SCI)
The Center advertises and hires for the following academic year in March/April of the previous year. Occasionally there are openings in the middle of the year, but that is not standard. The center advertises all positions to graduate students in Forestry, Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, QERM, Statistics and Biostatistics. Other graduate students may also email Linda Hegrenes (lindabel@uw.edu) directly to inquire about potential TA’ships.
